LET’S CHEW THE FAT, LITERALLY

THIS BUBBLY GIRL DOESN’T SEEM LIKE SHE NEEDS CHEERING UP, BUT IF YOU WANT TO BRIGHTEN UP HER DAY, OR DATE, JUST BRING HER TO A SUMPTUOUS TREAT OF JAPANESE CULINARY DELIGHTS. HARDLY A TOUGH PALETTE TO CRACK, THE WAY TO HER HEART AND SMILE IS THROUGH HER WASHOKU STOMACH.

“I’m a foodie, do you know?”

Her birthday celebrations in March were a month long, because she had lunch and dinner treats with her friends and loved ones all the way through.

“My birthday was on 3 March and my meal dates were lined up till the end of March.”

Her epicurious pursuits slide easily into free slots of her weekly schedule, which are already few and far between, being a sought after host in Singapore. She pairs gastronomic delights with good company to sum up a happy lifestyle.

When she is not in the homeland, she puts trying exotic cuisine on her to-do list. Her tongue speaks of great accomplishment, palette-wise.

“I’ve tried chicken testicles, ostrich eggs and beef tongues! Oh, and duck blood!”

Her recent exotic conquest was whale sperm on local grounds, at Tatsuya, Goodwood Park Hotel.

“At first taste, the texture and flavour reminds one of a squid roe. Squishy, soft, white and tender. Well it doesn’t taste awful at all, after knowing what it is! A pretty exotic experience. Tell me what it is before consuming, I will still be able to gobble it down.”

The adventure seeker does that not just with cuisines, but experiences. She put her tastebuds to the test by dining in the dark at Nox, a restaurant at Beach Road. Relying on just your tastebuds and nothing else, she scored 80/100 in identifying what went into her mouth. Talk about being an expert with eating.

This girl knows what goes into her mouth and what’s worthy for her stomach. Asked for some tips, she gladly recommends some on the top of her list. She boasts of Tangerine’s innovative spa cuisine, which would go satisfyingly down your stomach guilt-free. Light, healthy and nutritious, the meal is enjoyed with a lovely ambience, as it is located at ESPA Resorts Worls Sentosa. Sharlyn had a personal food tasting session with the award-winning chef Ian Kittichai and Chef Eric Neo, which explains why the sweet experience hasn’t rolled away from her lips.

Next on the list would be Yamamoto at Marina Bay Sands. Impressed, she obviously documented her gastronomic experience with food photos. The Japanese restaurant is the brainchild of renowned chef Hide Yamaamoto.

Sharlyn’s taste is not limited to one type of cuisine, after all, we live in a haven of food variety don’t we? Also a fan of steaks, she recommends Bistecca, which is famous for their slabs of beef and desserts. The Tuscan steakhouse along Mohamed Sultan Road is quietly located but oozes with flavour on the menu, from raw oysters to well-done steaks, cold, tartare-style to hot and crisp fries, savoury asparagus greens to sweet panna cotta dreams.

“Bistecca Tuscan Steakhouse is dedicated to offering steak like no other; the perfect Bistecca alla Fiorentina: a charcoal-grilled steak that is tasty, tender and so finely textured that it melts like butter in your mouth. Beef is cut in artisan-butcher style to produce bone-in, inch thick steaks. Cooked in classic Florentine style over a high temperature wood-fired grill, the signature charred-crust seals in the juicy centre for a full-flavoured steak that strikes the ideal balance of taste, texture and tenderness.”

Her list is endless, but recently, you might be able to spot her at Aoki by Les Amis, because she is hooked on the lunch sets that cost just $50.

“I will go for the Chirashi Lunch set that comes with a hearty bowl of Chirashi and generous portions of sashimi. The desserts, that come along are also very exquisite!”

Will she start food blogging?

No.

“I just enjoy good food and documenting the food through photos and sharing with friends on Facebook. I enjoy the process of scouting for good food. I think it’s a very Singaporean thing!”

Sharlyn is a bilingual host in Singapore that has hosted a variety of prestigious events from the fashion industry to conferences. The former Singapore Airline stewardess has also lent her voice to radio shows and TV commercials.
